Top 10 Reasons Why Prudence is Necessary in Using the Social Media?

Prudence is to be observed in the wise use of social media

Care for what we post, share, like, tweet, retweet, pin, blog...

 1.  Social media use has the power to break or make the world.
-We need not add to the conflicts around the world.

 2. Only one in four people is using the social media
-The rest is watching. We don't need to discourage them.

 3. Social media users come from different backgrounds.
-We can't expect that each one thinks the same.

 4. The way of expressing the same thing is unique per person.
-It's always good to give allowance to understand.

 5. Not everything that a person would like to say can be posted in social media.
   -Wait for the proper time.

 6. Not everyone has the capacity to understand fully what you express.
-We need to choose the simplest, clearest and dearest words.

 7. A prudent social media-user is sensitive to the 'language' of other cultures.
-Language is symbolic of people's way of life:  the tradition!

 8. Prudence means practical intelligence and common sense.
-We can't simply follow the fad or fashion.

 9. Speaking for the 'voiceless' means engaging media in prudent dialogue.
-There can be no dialogue if only one party speaks.

10. It's not just to say anything but a prayer for wisdom to say things properly.
-The problems of the world are known through media; the miracle of prayer we need!

The use of social media is a great responsibility!

In the hands of prudent people, the wounds of division between nations and religions can be healed

Why outstanding charity is needed online?

In online communication there is the need for genuine charity:

1st:  The charity of a well-formed personality.

1. As there are billions of people using the internet; be a positive presence!
2. As there are too many problems in the world; be the solution!
3. As there are multiple number of reasons why people flock in the “virtual plaza”, be an online missionary.

2ndThe charity of the truth.

1.  As we know it, people are hungry for the truth.
2.  As we have observed, people easily believe about anything.
3.  As common sense dictates; we have to seek the truth, live and share (also) online.

3rd The charity of time.

1.  Not everybody has the luxury of time to read a whole article or watch a video.  Before putting “like” or “favourite”, read/watch/hear to understand and then, summarize in your own words.
2.  Today’s generation they say does not listen but observes everything that you do.  Notice your online activities.  For what did you invest your time?  Is it to know the extent of human suffering?
3.  Did you find the time to object to something you do not personally agree with, to give a positive comment or to reply to particular questions posted online?

4thThe charity which is “love”.

1.  Anything can happen in the internet.  We can even become anonymous or pretend to be someone else.  A loving heart discerns, “Is it proper or not?”, “Good or bad?”, “Am I acting with justice or not?”
2.  Becoming trustworthy is built on trust.  Can we trust those closest to us that they are responsible citizens of the internet or do we mistrust them each time they go online?
3.  Did we ever feel one with those who go online in order to find themselves?  Have we truly carried them in our hearts?  Do we give them company, spiritually?

5thSpiritual charity.

1.  The questions in life point to one thing:  human existence!  The origin, purpose, direction and finale of life are eschatological questions that can only be satisfied by supernatural answers.
2.  Familiarity with spiritual truths is the source of life in the internet-- the solid fiber within one’s being; the spiritual love that could bridge the gaps between different schools of thinking, feeling and behaving.
3.  Real spiritual charity does not lead to debate but to a deeper awareness of our finiteness. It makes us humble and disposed to receive others as they are because God accepts and loves us as we are.

6thIntellectual charity.

1.  There are “giants” in the internet; those who are well-off, well-versed in computer languages and well-known.  They will be grateful if anybody can intellectually challenge them.
2.  There is a great digital divide.  65% of global population is not in the internet and in some countries, the cost of subscription is so high.  We can brain storm along this line.
3.  When we fully know something, we don’t keep it to ourselves but share it with convictions.

7thLeadership charity.

1. People need directions.  The internet is flooded with information.  There is the need for somebody to sort out the wheat from the weeds; identify which is life-affirming and which is not.
2. There are suggested activities from concerned citizens.  It is great to support them!
3. Find something great which is not yet done; then post it online!

Why the need to be good online?

1. Whether online or offline, we need to be good always.

2. There are so many things in the internet which are counter-cultural; we need not add to that.

3.  In conscience, we know what is good and bad and that it is always right to choose what is good.

4.  We are responsible for others, moreso for the little ones:

  • The children see everything.  There are five year-old kids using the internet without any supervision.
  • Little kids do not know yet what is the difference between good and bad.
5. We want to do our part in laying the ground for a better future for the next generation.

6. We are unable to hold the attention of the youth.  The good message we put online are the teachings we would like them to "jump-start" their life with.

7.  We would like to ease the burdens of social media engineers; they need to be refreshed by Truth, Goodness and Beauty!
